The title of this is bad. It sounds like the problem has to do with contract negotiations with record labels. This in fact means that google is having trouble getting its itunes store competitor off the ground.

Itunes is the application for playing media and the itunes store is the business for selling media through itunes.

Itunes began without any store for purchasing music. You do not need to go to the itunes store to use itunes. The application imports music from CDs. Other audio and movie files can be added without visiting the store.

The store is just a convenience.

I'm sure google can make a media player to compete with Apple's itunes. The title of this thread should refer to the store, not the application.

As for the store, I don't understand why the record labels do not just advertise their own stores for music. They sell DRM free music files on itunes so why not on their own sites? And why not on other sites? What is the big deal? If I buy an mp3 file from sony directly I can put it in itunes.

Amazon does this. They sell you digital music and you can choose to put it in itunes or whatever application you choose.

I imagine the real issue is with the movies which still have protection in the itunes store.

Still, the movie companies sell digital movie files outside of itunes for itunes. On DVDs for instance you can get a digital copy and use itunes or other applications to unlock the file. Why do the movie companies not just open a store front of their own for this?

Who were those two bastards who voted down rdowns' post?

    :D

The counter is crap anyway. It goes from -1 to +1 without a 0. And it seems completely random.

My guess is that others have voted while you had already loaded the page, and then when you voted, it updated all votes.

well. i wish apple would allow record companies to sell cd's that are copy protected, with copies of songs in AAC fairplay protected. so that people can also use them digitally.

Microsoft is planning to release an App Store for Windows.

Oh yay! Another app-store rip off years after the OSX one has debuted.

Guns are tons of fun and I will probably own a few one day (when I live in an area where i can actually use them).

Gun's are dangerous and it's perfectly reasonable for pediatricians to talk with and inform parents about those risks and how to mitigate them. You'd be amazed HOW LITTLE some people know about raising kids

    Great ad.

I'm still hopeful that when my contract is up next year that I'll have choices than AT&T to get an iPhone on. For the most part AT&T has been fine where I currently live and work. However I'm been looking at homes in a different area of town and noticed I was getting horrible coverage.

umm my computer from 2004 could run Windows 8 (slowly but it could) because it does have a 64 bit processor in it. I also believe W8 is going to be 64 bit only. W7 was the last 32 bit OS.

As it should at this point, 64bit processors have been out long enough that this shouldn't be a problem.

Those people who still have 32bit processors are generally not the type of people who will be upgrading to w8 anyways.

For an H50, that's still too high temps for an OC. My 930, under -smp 8 settings with an H50 runs at 65C and 38C idle.

    what case do you have?

i'm actually have problems with my northbridge temps on the asus. i think it's the motherboard. right now i have the case open and a box fan blowing air on it

I got a black macbook for my father today and when I asked the girl at the cash register if I should wait until tomorrow she replied that if the price goes down on the macbook, they will adjust the price for me. I hope that's really true. She even said that it wouldn't be fair to penalise me because I wanted to buy a computer the day before a sale...hmmm. Does anybody know how this would work? Do I need to bring it in again, or can I just bring the receipt?

Bring it in with you...they will most likely do a return and repurchase using the same serial number, so you don't actually swap computers. Bring it with you to show them you are upset and serious. Remember...they don't HAVE to help you but most likely will.

And I can get a knife or fork at one of dozens of restaurants inside the terminal post security. What's your point?

George Carlin, once again, is right:

And if you didnt take a weapon on board, relax. After youve been flying about an hour, theyre gonna bring you a knife and fork! They actually give you a ****ing knife. Its only a table knife, but you could kill a pilot with a table knife. It might take a couple of minutes. Especially if hes hefty. But you could get the job done. If you really wanted to kill the prick. ****, there are a lot of things you could use to kill a guy. You could probably beat a guy to death with the Sunday New York Times, couldnt you? Suppose you just have really big hands? Couldnt you strangle a flight attendant? ****, you could probably strangle two of them, one with each hand. That is, if you were lucky enough to catch em in that little kitchen area. Just before they break out the ****in peanuts. But you could get the job done. If you really cared enough.

    RP:

All you have shown is a deep-seated fear of advertising. And it's been stated that Apple doesn't actually collect this data, so it isn't even being used for iAds.

How exactly, specifically, will this cell phone tower tracking info compromise your personal safety? What exactly is there to fear? There must be something more than targeted advertising, which is at best an annoyance you have to live with anyway.

Some people just don't like to be tracked. If the data fell into to hands of an untoward person, then there might be an issue.

    Who is this "untoward person"?

    What would the "issue" be?

Technically I started with Panther, but I bought a Mac Mini like the day after Tiger was released so it came with an upgrade disc. I figured I could try out a Mini and see if I could use a Mac full time and well...

    2005 Mac Mini -> 12" PowerBook G4 (last generation) -> 2nd Generation MacBook (black) -> 15" MacBook Pro (2008 Unibody) -> 13" MacBook Pro (last generation).

I ran Tiger through most of that span. I never felt like dropping the money on Leopard and finally got it with the MBP. I did, however, upgrade to Snow Leopard on day 1. I've been pleased with every upgrade and look forward to Lion.

(Ha! And this post just made me a 6502!)

Yeah, it's a shame the new phone comes with some baggage:

    Shaped like a brick
    Drops calls (antenna design)
    Shatters when you drop it
    Tired old OS

..but it's still desirable over all the other phones.

Apple can fix some of these issues this summer, if they're not too smug to get off their high horse.

Might want to climb off your own first, old boy ...

Wow, if they don't get those changes implemented immediately Lion is going to be the Mac's Vista!!1! :p

What are you talking about? The screenshots shown here are from the latest developer release of the software, meaning that anything you see is already implemented in code and being used by registered Mac OS developers the world over.

yes they could. We are not talking about zillion CPU's here. AMD could satisfy Apple's demands just fine.

The only evidence I've seen for AMD's ability to produce chips is that currently they are struggling to meet the market's needs after the deal with Dell. I think it is a fair assumption that AMD's ability to supply Apple was taken into account when the Intel decision was being looked at.

All the Windows 7 I use are campus installs, so since they're not configurable, I haven't really looked around the settings. Does Windows have virtual desktops yet?

I think this a typical engineer/geek/nerd wet dream. I also think the current iPod is too big for the gym (I use the Nano). Watching TV shows or movies on the iPod doesn't appeal to me. Imagine watch a TV show on a screen a little bit bigger than a business card, fabulous, good times!

An iPod that plays Movies and TV shows on a bigger screen like your TV sounds more plausible. But think how complicated this scenario is. Lets keep it simple, lets watch TV shows on our TV beam via cable/satellite. If you have to make a decision to download TV shows (note the one that you like and ignoring the rest) then download it to your TV then simplicity is lost. The product i.e. video iPod is dead on arrival.

...I know the media invite says "It's Showtime" and we know what the connotation is for that. But I find it interesting that the theater where the event is being held is done up with huge silhouette iPod ads, which doesn't really fit the "It's Showtime" theme, unless the new true video iPod is also going to be announced in conjunction with the movie download service.

I think the true video iPod is pretty much guaranteed to be released today.
